The five-minute water change

The single biggest reason people quit the hobby is not algae or sick fish. It is the bucket. Thirty litres down a hallway, twice a fortnight, and the tank starts feeling like a chore. It does not have to be that way.
The five-minute routine
Everything below assumes one thing: water goes from tap to tank through a hose, and waste goes from tank to drain through the same hose. Once you own that, a 40% change on a 3-foot tank is five minutes of standing around.
- Drain and vacuum in one motion. An electric gravel vacuum pulls water and mulm without you sucking a hose like it's 1995.
- Or go full system. The electric water exchanger drains and refills straight from the tap. Bucket-free, backache-free.
- Condition while you fill. Add dechlorinator to the tank as new water flows in — modern conditioners work instantly.
Why RO matters for some tanks
If you keep shrimp, Discus or plants that hate your tap water, a countertop RO system removes the unpredictability. Mix RO with tap to hit your target hardness, and your water changes stop being a gamble on what the water authority did this week.
The habit that ties it together
Smaller, more often beats bigger, rarely. Two 25% changes a week keep nitrates flatter than one 60% panic change — and with the right gear, each one costs you five minutes and zero buckets.
